Sprocket is a fantastic engineering puzzle game

I think I can best describe Sprocket as an Engineer’s puzzle game — or nightmare. The game idea is simple, and the app itself is very well done. But, it’s also very challenging.

The basic idea is that you are presented with a spinning sprocket and one (or more) goal sprockets that need to be spinning in the direction indicated on the goal sprocket. You need to take the spare parts provided and connect them in series to make the goal sprocket spin in the correct direction. Some levels you will need to use all of the spare parts, others you will not. Sounds simple, yes, but it’s not.

As you get used to the game, things will make more sense and you will learn what you can and can’t do. The best advice I can give is to start with the drive sprocket and see what pieces can even be placed close enough to connect to that sprocket to make them spin. From there, just keep doing that to build the chain to the destination.

The controls are good — the app makes good use of multi-touch to control the zoom and position of the screen. The idea of game is very simple, but gets difficult quickly — especially when you have multiple goal sprockets to get spinning. But for $0.99 (current sale price) it’s a great puzzle game.

This game was a very unexpected and very appreciated find. If you like challenging puzzles, and you have at least a decent grasp of machines and such, give it a shot. It’s a good game that’s very well done.
