One would be forgiven for thinking RoomScan Pro was something of black magic. The ability to create automatic room plans is great, but one should be aware of its approximate measurements.

Just like its name suggests, RoomScan Pro is a tool designed to allow for the accurate measuring of individual rooms. It does this by taking advantage of the iPhone's accelerometer (and other sensors) to map the distance between the walls in any given room one chooses to scan, and then returning the resulting plan of what it thinks that room looks like.

The premium version (the free version provides one with the ability to scan a limited number of rooms) of RoomScan Pro first asks the user for the name and address of the property. If one has their iPhone's location setting activated, this information will be populated automatically. Tapping on a named property will see one able to create a “New Room.” Here, those using the app can name the room they are about to scan, alongside stating what floor that room is on.

Scanning a room requires physically taking one's iPhone to each wall, making sure to hold it both flat and steady. RoomScan Pro will beep after it has successfully mapped the wall one is currently scanning; a signal that tells the user to move onto the next. In order to scan a room successfully users must scan the entire room, finishing at the second wall. For example, if a room had: Wall A, B, C, and D, (and 'Wall D' completed the room), the user would have to scan Wall A, B, C, D, A, and B (again) in order for RoomScan Pro to successfully scan that room.

Adding a door to any given room is as simple as tapping and selecting the option “Add a Door.” Once a door has been added, tapping that portion of the room plan again will see one able to “Add a Room” connecting to that door one just placed. Heading to the app's in-built “Settings” menu will see users able to change the length units used by RoomScan Pro, as well as the area units it uses to calculate the space in each room scanned. There are also toggle options to control spoken instructions, door swings, and whether the path of one's iPhone being moved around the room is shown on the finished room plan (or not).

Overall, having tested the app with different sized rooms, RoomScan Pro appears to work fairly well - at least, for individual rooms. It did appear to struggle with interpreting the shape of 'landing' or conjoining areas, but I am aware that could also be down to my understanding of how to go about scanning these areas for the best effective result.

If one is in the property business or is house-hunting and needs a solution to create, save, and e-mail approximate room measurements and basic floor plans direct from their iPhone, RoomScan Pro might be worth a look. Just don't rely on its wall measurements too much.
