I like wine. When someone more knowledgeable than I has suggested I drink some sort of expensive wine, I tend to enjoy it. I know absolutely nothing about it though. Not a thing. I just drink it. An app like Pocket Wine has clearly been designed for me.

There’s a wealth of information on offer in this app. Pocket Wine offers detailed descriptions of all the different wine styles available such as aromatic, crisp, fruity or smooth. It then goes onto explain the different types of grape and how they taste, whether they’re dry or sweet. Even details such as acidity and the ideal age at which the wine will taste best. Each of these sections is simple to navigate so it never feels like an overwhelming amount of information to take in.

There’s also the addition of practical sections such as an explanation of what type of wine would suit what food – something I honestly had no clue about beforehand. Further to this, there’s a My Taste section where you can complete a few simple questions to determine what kind of things you like (such as if you prefer mild or spicy food), and it explains what wine would be appropriate for you. It works, too. I was suspicious but having tested it both on myself and more knowledgeable friends, the results were correct each time. It really did determine wines that I enjoyed more so than others.

Finally, there’s also a glossary to help you decipher wine based terms that might have previously confused the heck out of you.

Pocket Wine is a fantastic little app for the wannabe wine connoisseur or even those who know what they’re talking about but want to double check, or possibly learn of new wines they hadn’t heard of before. I’ll certainly be using it more frequently in the run up to Christmas. This app alone could ensure that I finally appreciate wine properly.
