OmniSketch Review

iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

OmniSketch is a powerful procedural art tool that provides a lot of bang for the $1.99 price tag. Even the untrained artist can find some enjoyable features in OmniSketch.

OmniSketch is an app designed to bring procedural drawing to the iDevice platform. What used to take hours can take only minutes with one of the various tools that OmniSketch has to offer. With 24 different shapes and styles to choose from, the possibilities for artistic creativity are endless.

OmniSketch can be used to create various pictures, depending on the level of talent of the user. The easiest, in my opinion, are more abstract designs, that make full use of the various features available in OmniSketch. With mirrored drawing, users can make intricate designs with ease. The Kaleidoscope mode especially kept my interest for sometime, where everything that is drawn is mirrored in all four corners of the image.

There are various other tools available in OmniSketch as well. There are blending options to adjust brightness and depth, line width adjustments, opacity adjustments, and tons of other tools you would expect from an art app of this design. Especially nice, is the ability to upload your work onto facebook, twitter, or an online gallery for the world to see.

I’m not an artist, and I certainly don’t see myself having the capability to utilize the full potential of OmniSketch. I do, however, realize how powerful this app can be for those with the talents to make good use of it. Even if you don’t have the necessary skill set to master this app, the Kaleidoscope mode in and of itself makes for a lot of fun, even if for a short time.

I can’t recommend OmniSketch to everyone, because some people just aren’t interested in Art. It’s a sure fire bet for procedural artists, and an interesting app for anyone interested in art, even slightly. It’s a small risk at $1.99, and even if you interact with the app in no greater detail than I have, you’ll leave thinking it was an interesting experience.
