Nom Nom Paleo is a well-known blog read by many followers of the diet inspired by our hunter-gather ancestors, also known as The Caveman Diet. The blog’s creator recently launched the Nom Nom Paleo app in an effort to provide users with quick access to 53 popular recipes. Complete with high-resolution photos and updated step-by-step cooking instructions,

After testing the app out on my iPad 2, I am highly impressed with the interface of Nom Nom Paleo. Described in the App Store as a cookbook “on steriods,” I would have to say that this is a pretty accurate statement.

Scrollable recipe categories are lined up on the top of the screen where users can browse through the stunning images to find that perfect recipe. Touching on one of the recipes brings up the detailed instructions, complete with crisp photographs. Nom Nom Paleo is packed with 1,500 of these stunning images, which is great for people like myself who cook better by actually seeing the process.

Users new to the Paleo diet or those who wish to learn more can read the detailed Paleo 101 guide that provides numerous resources and extensive information about nutrition and health. In addition to the newbie guide, Nom Nom Paleo is also loaded with many other incredible features such as tips, shortcuts and techniques as well as the option to create an email-friendly grocery list, a constant-on function that prevents the screen from dimming while users cook and even the ability to email complete recipes to friends.

While the app provides users with instant access to the blog’s free recipes and a starter set of over 50 recipes, additional recipe packs must be purchased within the app. For a $4.99 app, many users are disappointed that they must purchase additional recipe packs as IAPs for $0.99 each. Purchasing all the recipes would add an additional 60 recipes to the app, which brings the total to over 110 recipes for $11. I don’t know of too many cookbooks that are this cheap to purchase, especially in full-color and complete with amazing features. I didn’t find this to be a flaw, and actually liked the option to purchase only recipes that suit my tastes.

There is one side note that iOS users should read. The app currently is not available on other iOS platforms nor does it work properly on the first generation iPad. This leaves some iOS users in the dust for now, but the developers are working hard to make the app accessible for everyone.

To wrap it up, Nom Nom Paleo is an engaging and impressive virtual cookbook that is perfect for Paleolithic dieters as well as those who wish to live healthier lifestyles. The delicious interface and amazing detail put into the app make it one of the best virtual cookbooks available in the App Store.
