Playing a solidly competent game of brick busting, Monsta Brick Breaker is a fun if unexceptional title.

Maybe it's because we're all quite destructive on a primal level, but there's something quite enjoyable about brick breaking games - even if they are often quite samey. That's the case with Monsta Brick Breaker. It's a fun if slightly unremarkable title. As an entertaining and free distraction it'll scratch the itch for a sufficient time, thereby warranting a download.

Players control a monster (or "monsta" as the game likes to call it) with a giant leaf that can be used to propel a ball skywards in order to knock out all the bricks scattered around each level. Monsta Brick Breaker offers plenty of different levels, encompassing numerous different themes. Ultimately though, the goal remains the same.

Fortunately, for a title so focused on twitch gaming it offers quite responsive controls. Players tap on the screen to release the ball before dragging their finger side-to-side to move the 'monsta' around. Levels can be slightly more challenging than most, at least early on, with blocks often located quite low to the bottom of the screen. A series of power-ups smooth things out somewhat though, with a plentiful supply of multi ball boosts proving particularly useful.

A special power-up in the form of a Magic Potion can be unleashed too, provided one collects sufficient numbers of a super potion to do so. This potion counter is reset each time the player runs out of all their lives, but this is as about as harsh as Monsta Brick Breaker gets. Otherwise it's a fairly forgiving title, if grind-focused.

That grind comes from the coins gained through playing or bought with real money. The coins then open up new stages of the game, thereby giving one a fairly good reason to pay up. Given the lowest in-app purchase is priced at $0.99, it seems quite reasonable to pay at least once - not that it's essential. Monsta Brick Breaker might not be the most memorable of titles but it'll prove fun while it lasts, even despite the unusual omission of Game Center achievements.
