Every now and then, there's a reminder on the App Store that the Endless genre still has plenty of life to it. This time round, that game is Maze Crusade. It might not be the most instantly addictive of games in a genre requiring brief commitment to unlock the best stuff, but there's no denying that it's rather fun and different from the rest.
Players control a brave Knight as he navigates a never-ending maze of trouble. Within that maze are enemies that must be defeated and collectibles that can be acquired. More importantly, players must keep moving at all times as spikes at the bottom of the screen inch their way upwards, potentially leading to the Knight's demise.
It's a simple idea and one that's well implemented. Controls are easy enough, requiring a swipe in order to move in that direction. Movements can be queued up briefly, ensuring that action isn't made too frantic by such a scheme.
A series of missions pave the way to adding a purpose to Maze Crusade. These are often tied into the collectibles on offer. Collect three of one type and a power-up is activated. These can include invisibility for a brief time, a coin magnet bonus, or an explosive stick of dynamite that can be used to blow up certain walls. Each of them is beneficial in their own way.
The coins gained throughout each session can be used to boost these power-ups further. My favorite of the bunch was the ability to ride a horse through the level for a brief time, capturing the spirit of a brave Knight well. Eventually it's even possible to build defensive towers. That trickle feed of new content works well to keep one interested.
Ultimately, Maze Crusade is a simple yet enjoyable title. Feeling mildly more cerebral than the average Endless Runner game thanks to the need to combine items, it'll gradually captivate players' attention.
