A re-imagining of classic title Qix, and also an iOS conversion of a popular PC game of a similar name, Line Knight Fortix certainly has the pedigree to be something special. It very nearly is too, although slightly flakey controls and lack of Game Center leaderboards hinder its chances.
Taking control of Sir Fortix, a Line Knight, players must draw their way around various stages; capturing enemy positions by cutting a shape out of the map. While once upon a time, such a format was used to trap balls away, this time it’s used to capture dragons, bats, and orcs.
It’s a pretty simple system to understand. Drawing a shape is reasonably easy with a risk/return concept being vital here. While large shapes can achieve more such as capture a dragon as well as a turret at the same time, thereby leading to more points, timing is imperative. Opposition is fierce with some dragons able to breathe fire and turrets able to fire ballistics at the player. Worst of all are blood bats and bone dragons, both able to seek out the player and thwart their efforts. At times, one must collect keys to unlock new areas of a stage, with power-ups also keeping things varied.
Issues arise mostly from the occasionally temperamental nature of the control system. The majority of the time it works fine, but every once in a while a mistake will occur and it won’t be the player’s fault. During a fraught moment this is undoubtedly frustrating.
Line Knight Fortix is quickly quite challenging so accurate controls are vital, something that isn’t always apparent. Competitive elements are also slightly dampened by the lack of leaderboard support with only achievements there for the taking. Line Knight Fortix offers plenty to sink one’s teeth into, courtesy of 45 levels, but fighting it out for the best score would have been the icing on the cake.
Despite that, Line Knight Fortix is still a fun game, offering an entertaining twist on a familiar format. Just expect some mild frustration once in a while when Fortix doesn’t respond quite how one would expect.
