It's inoffensive enough, but that's the problem for LEGO Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles. It's actually quite a dull variety of inoffensive.

LEGO Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles is a nice idea for a game. It’s a collection of mini-games, split up into light and dark side, with plenty of Lego charm that we all know and love, courtesy of Lego being awesome. Sounds promising, right? Unfortunately, LEGO Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles is actually rather dull and will only hold your attention for a couple of minutes.

The selection of mini-games looks pretty promising, even despite the fact that there’s an ominous ‘coming soon’ banner for a few of them. Dive into one and the controls are laid out reasonably clearly, because LEGO Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles is a simple game clearly aimed at the younger end of the market. I started out with a game where I ran down a corridor battling stormtroopers. I could move from left to right, as well as flick my lightsaber around. That was it, though. It went on for quite a while with mindless stormtroopers bounding towards me, easily taken out, and eventually I got bored.

The next game looked more promising, being a game where I took control of a ship while flying around shooting at stuff. Again though, it lacked any sense of peril and excitement. Then there’s a game where you fall endlessly in space, trying to dodge obstacles in your wake. That’s actually the most uninteresting of the bunch. Both the light and dark side offer the same selection of games, just with slight aesthetic changes to make you think they’re significantly different.

It’s all so dull. It’s not so much that any of the mini-games are particularly badly made or that the controls are a mess, it’s just simply very uninteresting. There aren’t any in-app purchases to offend, which is something, but the general beige-ness of LEGO Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles is a big issue. In a weird sort of way, that’s worse than something mechanically at fault. The Star Wars franchise sometimes inspires great use of imagination, but it really fails that here.
