Guitar Rock Tour is the best version of Guitar Hero/Rock Band yet on the iPhone. For one thing they use real songs (but recorded by other bands ala Guitar Hero). You also have the option of playing guitar or drums. Combine those pluses with this fact that this is the most finished of all of the games in the rhythm genre and you’ve got a pretty damn good game.
Everyone is probably familiar with the Guitar Hero type game. It’s a rhythm game where you have to time your touches of the targets with the arrival of the falling notes. The closer you hit to notes to the arrival the better you do. The more notes in a row you get the better the crowd likes you and you pass the level.
This game has 2 ways to play — just pick a song, and instrument, and a level and play. Or a career mode where you progress from small venue to larger venue.
I have to confess something here. I SUCK HARD at these games. I have no rhythm at all it appears. I can just barely pass on the easiest levels. Past that and I just get confused. But even for me this game is still fun — but only on the easiest level. It’s great to have songs that you know to be able to play along with unlike the other similar apps in the App Store.
One thing that I don’t like about this game is the sustained notes. While I have no problem with the move, it’s just too hard to see them on the game board. They need to stand out more.
Interesting that they priced this game where they did. While I don’t think it’s over-priced — it is high considering the current iPhone app store market.
One note — for some reason this game does not work on the iPod Touch.
If you like this type of rhythm game then this is by far the best option for the iPhone. Well done, rocking game. And if you don’t like this type of game, or like me aren’t good at it, you might still enjoy it. I did.
