Grumble and Piccolo’s Fishing Trip is a classic match 3 game that is similar to other match 3 games available in the app store. However, the game does have a few interesting mechanics that differentiate it, while having controls and gameplay that will be very familiar to any fans of the genre.
Any match 3 enthusiast will instantly know how to play Grumble and Piccolo’s Fishing Trip. The game board is full of different types of sea creatures that have to be matched into lines of at least 3. Players move sea creatures by tapping or swiping to move it either vertically or horizontally. If the move makes a line of 3 of the same sea creatures, then they are caught and disappear from the game screen. New sea creatures then fall in from the top to fill up the space. In order to complete a level, players must catch a certain amount of each type of sea creature. The sea creatures include crabs, blowfish, shrimp, and fish.
The game gets difficult due to a time limit that is always counting down and the hazards that fill the game board. Some of the hazards include sea mines that explode whenever two touch each other, and rocks that cannot normally be moved or matched. Players can also earn what is called a “recast”, which scrambles the board.
Players periodically earn gadgets, which can be placed in a crab pot to fall into the game board. When a sea creature beneath the crab pot is captured, the gadget enters the game board. There are multiple types of gadgets, such a gadget that sends out chains in all four directions to clear all of the sea creatures it hits.
The game has four different styles of environments, and a story woven throughout. The graphics are childish and fun, but aren’t remarkable. The cut scenes are nicely drawn though.
Any match 3 fanatic will like this game. It has all of the standard match 3 game components and a few unique touches, like the gadgets and sea mines. It’s not radically different than any other match 3 game, but it is a solid competitor.
