Photography can be an expensive hobby, which is why iPhoneography has become so popular. With just an iPhone and an arsenal of apps, many photography enthusiasts are able to capture breathtaking images.

Many apps offer the same features like filters, adjustments and frames. A new app takes a step away from tradition and has brought something new to the table.

FocusTwist is a replacement for the expensive $400 Lytro light field camera. It allows users to focus on photos after they are taken by capturing several pictures automatically, each with different focus points.

The interface is quite basic. Once it is started, users can begin capturing images, browse a library of photos already taken or look at pictures that others have taken with the app.

When it’s time to take a photo, it’s essential to follow the app’s directions carefully. The iPhone must remain still at all times, so users must either place it on a tripod or rely on their steady hands. The object in the foreground should be placed around 3 to 4 inches away from the iPhone and the object in the background needs to be more than five feet away for the best results.

The app takes several photos in a matter of seconds. Different parts of the image can then be focused to create unique images. The pictures can then be saved and shared with friends.

While FocusTwist is a refreshing break from the traditional photography apps, it can be a little frustrating at times. If users don’t hold the iPhone perfectly steady or don’t place objects at the right distance, the re-focused photos won’t be of the best quality.

FocusTwist does work as long as users have a little patience. Those who consider themselves iPhoneographers should add this app to their photo collection, but it shouldn’t be a replacement for the native Camera app.
