Flutter: Butterfly Sanctuary Review

The thought of raising butterflies never really crossed my mind before, but it’s not a farfetched idea. Who wouldn’t want to fill their lives with the beautiful insects? Flutter: Butterfly Sanctuary lets gamers not only raise and care for their own butterflies, but it also makes it possible to start a butterfly collection.

Upon starting the game, players can sign in with Facebook or create an account. I opted to play as a Guest since I wasn’t so sure if I’d be committed to raising butterflies. Butterfly Sanctuary opens with a quick tutorial to guide players, and then it’s time to start raising butterflies in a stunning rainforest environment.

Before players can raise a butterfly, leaves need cleared to give the nectar-feeding insects room to fly and grow. The incubator is used to attract eggs. When eggs are in the incubator, they take time to hatch into caterpillars. Once a caterpillar emerges, players must move it to a cleared out area to feed it leaves so that it can create a cocoon and turn into a butterfly.

Butterflies produce honeydew that is spent on clearing more areas. Along with collecting honeydew, players also must collect pollen from flowers to level up the butterflies. Of course, all of this takes time. Players can use Flutterbucks to hurry the wait times. These Flutterbucks are earned or bought as in-app purchases.

It's essential to care for the butterflies to work hard toward collecting all the different species. Players can fuse butterflies together to raise maximum levels in order to work toward this goal. Along with collecting butterflies, gamers will also enjoy completing goals and earning Game Center achievements.

The game is quite entertaining and I had more fun than I anticipated, but that fun began to wear off after awhile. Flutter: Butterfly Sanctuary needs more to keeps players satisfied. Adding mini-games to help pass the time would be a great start. Also, those who are impatient may become frustrated as it seems like the game requires longer wait times as players progress.

For a freemium title, Flutter: Butterfly Sanctuary actually isn’t bad. The graphics are well-polished, the controls are fluid and the gameplay is relaxing. I recommend it to those who don’t mind a fun time-waster, but many may wish to pass it up and move onto something a little more fast-paced and exciting.
