The amazing thing about the human brain is that, for all of our narcissistic belief in its superiority, it’s remarkably easy to fool. And for some reason, we actually enjoy being fooled…some of the time, at least! Eye Illusions does just that, serving up tons of illusions and various “mind tricks.” The app itself is fairly well designed, though load times could be improved. If you’re a fan of illusions, Eye Illusions is a great app to have—to enjoy yourself or to show off to others.

When you boot up Eye Illusions, you have your pick of ways to view the illusions. The categories include Weird Lines, Motion Illusions, Impossible Objects, Appearing Objects, Hidden Objects, and Color Tests. You can also view recent additions, popular illusions, or pictures that you’ve designated as Favorites.

The illusions themselves range from basic and overdone (two faces and a cup in between, of opposite color) to the intriguingly puzzling. My personal favorites are the impossible and hidden objects. The appearing objects also hide fun secrets. If you can’t figure out a puzzle or want a bit of background info, the app includes a short blurb about each image.

My only complaint is that the app takes so long to load images. Even flicking through the thumbnails takes a while on WiFi—it’s nothing crippling, but it does interrupt an otherwise smooth experience. The likely culprit is that the app stores the illusions online, so you get a trade-off between space on your iPhone and the time it takes to view illusions. This also allows the developers to add new illusions without pushing an official update through Apple. However, there must be a compromise…those blank tiles get irritating.

Still, Eye Illusions is a solid app overall. It does exactly what it claims: gives you a library of optical illusions. If that doesn’t sound exciting, then this isn’t the app for you. I’ll admit that I wish the images loaded faster, but browsing through them is still a fun experience for any illusions fan. Personally, I used to love books of illusions when I was younger. Eye Illusions is just another dose of mind-tricking fun.
