It is easy to play Endless Boss Fight at first and think that it’s merely just that: a beat ’em up against one boss ad nauseam. And to a certain degree, it is. But its very cool asynchronous multiplayer mode makes it more than just a repetitive beat ‘em up.

EndlessBossFight-5Players control DD, a robot going up agains the bigger and stronger Boss. Boss likes to shoot missiles of various sorts and occasionally other more devious attacks at our little robotic pugilist. Every time DD knocks out Boss, Boss returns with a new arsenal of attacks – continuing until DD is finally defeated.

The singleplayer mode has players just taking on new Boss modes until DD dies, chasing high scores and collecting coins. But the multiplayer is where the real fun comes in. See, players fight others’ Bosses that they have customized with their own stats and attack sets. In these battles, players have to survive 3 rounds of 45 seconds each against the custom Boss, and if they don’t take down Boss in that round, Boss wins. Winning 2 out of 3 rounds and not dying is the victory condition –  even winning 2 rounds and then dying counts as a defeat. Players have separate ranks for their DD and their Boss that determines who they’ll be matched up against. Boss fights take place asynchronously, with occasional alerts in-game to notify of results and the rewards for winning. It’s also possible to take revenge for one’s own Boss loss on that opponent’s Boss.

EndlessBossFight-4The multiplayer mode is really quite key to the game, because it pays out the most of the game’s second currency, White Milk Coins (named after the developer), for successful fights. WMCs are used to buy stat upgrades for DD and Boss. DD can get stronger punches, more health, or more power-up usages per round. Boss can also get stronger, tougher, and get more “power,” the stat that can allow Boss to use more of the special attacks that players can set up to be used in each round. Customization becomes either about balancing Boss’ attacks throughout the rounds, or to perhaps go for an early knockout. It’s a cool secondary game that provides motivation for playing more.

The only problem is that, even with all the customization the game can be a bit repetitive because Boss only does so much. It just becomes about being smart. It can be hard to tell where DD is in relation to the missiles that Boss unleashes, too. Really, a lot of the challenge comes in from when Boss does massive damage, so the game becomes about knowing how to approach the various challenges and to execute them consistently well.

Still, even with its flaws Endless Boss Fight is an incredibly creative approach to the beat ’em up. Check this one out.
