A simple if tricky rogue-like, DUNGEONy is entertaining if a tad shallow.

Simplicity is the name of the game here, as well as the actual name: DUNGEONy. It's a rogue-like game that's ideal for playing in short bursts, which is handy as without a comprehensive autosave feature this is a bit of a 'one hit' kind of game.

The idea is a familiar one: players choose from six characters, each with their own difficulty level (mostly relating to their skills in attacking or defending), before delving into some randomly-generated dungeons. Each level of the dungeon is full of enemies to tackle and loot to collect. Fighting it out is simple enough though, as a simple tap towards the enemy causes one to auto fight until there's only one living soul left. Loot is similarly basic as just running over it collects it, with no inventory system to speak of.

That's a system that both works and doesn't work. It means DUNGEONy is an easy game to drop in on, while still feeling as if progress is being made, but it's also incredibly simplistic. Levelling up only works for the duration of that session, meaning that DUNGEONy sometimes feels a little disjointed. Getting to the end of the 32 levels on offer before fighting it out with a boss is quite an accomplishment and certainly takes a long time, thanks to the permadeath feature. However, a little more depth would have been much appreciated. Boss battles earlier on, for instance, could have helped greatly.

Still, as a small if competent rogue-like, DUNGEONy is pleasant enough. Its visuals are simple yet suit the genre quite well, and a variety of different characters (although quite similar in nature) go some way to extending longevity, along with the tricky difficulty curve.
