The slight awkwardness stems from the controls, which conversely become quite well implemented once the first few minutes of playing have passed. Two wheels are placed on either side of the screen. The one on the left dictates whether the submarine is diving or rising, while the right wheel controls the speed and whether it is going left or right. It feels a little odd at first, and I found myself overdoing the manoeuvres for the first few minutes. It does click, though, and fits the submarine motif perfectly.

Players must negotiate a series of different levels in order to find treasure, as well as complete a series of individual objectives. These tend to relate to destroying enemy subs, collecting plenty of coins, or descending a sufficient distance.

Such coins can be used to upgrade the submarine, either by making it faster, able to withstand more damage or giving it the ability to descend even lower. It's a shame there's no visual indicator of improvements, though.

The controls for firing upon enemies are a couple of buttons affecting trajectory, meaning it isn't the most satisfying of combat. Mildly annoyingly, if destroyed or defeated halfway through the stage, one must find all the treasures again, which can involve a lot of work in some of the larger stages.

That's the thing about Dive for Treasures. It's more about the exploration and, admittedly, I'd have preferred no combat at all. Dive for Treasures might be a little rough around the edges, but it makes up for it with oodles of charm.
