Not a game for those who hate gore, but Rat Assassin is a fun Fruit Ninja-style rat-based slice em up.

One of the most highly anticipated console and PC games this year, Dishonored is set to hit our systems in less than a month's time. Dishonored: Rat Assassin won't really give you a taste of what to expect from such a title, but it will entertain those after a casual gaming thrill.

You see, despite the ideas that may be conjured up from noticing that it's made by Bethesda, Dishonored: Rat Assassin owes a heck of a lot to Fruit Ninja. It's tempting to say it's a clone of the fruit slicing game but that feels a little disingenuous. Dishonored: Rat Assassin does involve slicing up rats with your finger (and, yes, that's as gory as it sounds) as they jump up the screen but the inclusion of a Challenge mode goes a long way to giving the game its own identity.

These challenges come in three different varieties: easy, medium and hard. Some stages might just require slicing up a certain number of rats before the time limit expires, others require more accurate slicing thanks to an increased number of obstacles. The most satisfying are the ones that mix things up, such as requiring players to track a spotlight or use a crossbow rather than a blade. They might be subtle changes to a tried and tested formula but it works. There's more reason to stand by Dishonored: Rat Assassin than you'd expect and it's fun to work through the challenges.

More typical Fruit Ninja-style action is available through the Assassination mode and the Timed mode. The latter is self explanatory while the former is a survival mode with a different name. Each mode contains short bursts of slicing fun.

Dishonored: Rat Assassin further encourages repeated sessions by offering unlockable extras. They're not the most thrilling, with new backgrounds, slice actions and musical tracks, but everyone loves feeling they've achieved something and it works suitably well here.

Tie-in games are frequently a little weak, trying to pack so much into so little. Dishonored: Rat Assassin dodges that quite nicely and, while it doesn't bear much similarity to what will happen in the full game, it's a fun distraction that's worth taking the time to download.
