iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

It’s a free dictionary that works well. This statement pretty much sums up this app. Want to know the exact definition of antidisestablishmentarianism? It’s there… I promise.

There is a point in the day where I just want to know the definition of a word. All of us go through this, whether it be because of a co-workers vocabulary blunder or a blunder of your own. Typically I just use Google because Google knows all, but sometimes getting online to do a Google search is a pain. Downloading an app is would be the answer for this problem, but most of the good dictionary apps cost money. I don’t mind spending money on apps, but why should I pay for something that Google can answer for me in two minutes?

Concept
The answer to my previous question is that you shouldn’t have to pay for something that is readily available for free. The iPhone app Dictionary.com solves this issue by giving you an offline dictionary that contains more than 275,000 words and 80,000 synonyms included in its built in thesaurus. Along with the basic dictionary and thesaurus functions, there is also an audio pronunciation for the words and a really nice word of the day section.

Functionality/Quality
The goal of a dictionary, in my opinion, is to be as straightforward as possible. I don’t want any animation, but I do want something that is stylish but simple. An example of the ease of use would be an attempted search for the word “sleepy”. If I click on the dictionary button and type in “sleepy” I get the definition of the word sleepy. Now if I click on the thesaurus button I get all of the synonyms for the word sleepy, including blah, comatose, and slumbersome (which my spell check fails to accept as a word).

Usefulness
This app is extremely useful in the situation that you need a dictionary on the cheap that doesn’t require any online access. It does what it is set out to do, and does it quite well. I really don’t know why you would need any other dictionary on your iPhone

Overall
This is an app that you just need to pick up this very second. I don’t like to push apps on people, but there really is no good reason not to have this one on your iPhone. You may, one day, need a dictionary… and when the time comes, you will be ready. What the heck does antidisestablishmentarianism mean? You may not know, but my dictionary.com app definitely does. For the price of no food at all this app can have a home on your iPhone. You’d be silly not to have it.
