Photo 12There are countless tower defense games available in the App Store, each offering their own unique environments and weapons. Defense Technica attempts to stand out from the crowd by offering beautiful graphics, futuristic battlegrounds, and a much stronger emphasis on strategic gameplay. Players not only build towers, but also position them in a way that alters the enemy’s path, so as to achieve the most devastating attack. Solid graphics and challenging gameplay make it a worthwhile download.

After a brief guided tutorial, players can immediately jump into the gameplay. For those not familiar with this genre, the purpose is to defend a base, or in this case a core, from multiple waves of enemy attack. This is done by building weapon towers in strategic locations along the enemy path. There is some limitation here, as there are only a few preselected locations to build towers, in contrast to other popular tower defense games we all know and love.

Photo 8The towers are placed by tapping on an available square, selecting a tower, and tapping once more to place it on the grid. Towers may also be upgraded or sold later on in the game. It’s very important to understand which towers will do the most damage to certain types of enemies. Some towers won’t do any damage to the enemies in that level and would be useless to purchase. Furthermore, these towers must be strategically placed, not only to inflict damage upon enemy units, but also to alter their path. Each level has an optimum path for enemy units that allows for maximum tower coverage. Enemies travel on their own path until players build obstacles and towers that block certain paths in order to shape the optimum one. After each wave has been defeated, and the core is still standing, the level is complete.

Defense Technica really has everything that makes a tower defense game successful: beautiful graphics, addictive gameplay, and challenging levels. While there really isn’t much to complain about, it would be nice to have the ability to rotate the field 360 degrees, so that players can view the battle from any angle. Other than that, this is absolutely a worthy addition to the genre. Go check it out.
