Simple to use and taking moments to create an effect, ColorMania FX does a reasonable job of adding texture style effects to images. Whether it's actually needed, amongst a plethora of other photography apps, will be mostly down to personal taste, but it should keep filter addicts happy.

Within seconds, users can change their photographs around. The first step involves rotating or cropping an image to the relevant size with the next stage offering users the choice of masking parts of the image. It's possible to leave the entire image open to filtering, but it's convenient to be able to mask out certain areas so that they remain untouched. Brush sizes and different brush types make it possible to be fairly accurate with brush strokes, although I'd have appreciated the ability to zoom in.

Once a mask has been applied, it's down to the user to find a texture or filter that appeals to them. 57 options means there should be something for everyone. Some simply turn the photo brighter or into a black and white, old fashioned image. Others add texture effects such as a wood style look or smoke to the image. I struggled to find any filter that was particularly weak, although a few did seem a little samey compared to others in the selection. The general variety ensures it was possible to find something for most ideas.

Once that's been applied, that's ColorMania FX's job finished. Users can then either save their creation to the camera roll or share with other apps such as Instagram. It's all very easy and fast to learn, although there was a slight pause with waiting for certain filters to be applied.

ColorMania FX does everything one could want. It just fails to stand out significantly. The filters are respectable enough but with little other content, there's still that sense that $0.99 or its full price of $1.99 could go further elsewhere.
