Cloud Breaker looks quite calming, doesn’t it? Serene looking clouds form the backdrop of this block-breaking game. It all looks quite predictable yet relaxing. That’s actually pretty far from the truth. Cloud Breaker is a game where speed is of the essence, and proves to be pretty frantic in no time.
As the description explains, Cloud Breaker involves arranging blocks according to color. Once all the blocks of one color are lined up with each other, they vanish. A chain reaction can be caused here too, with other colors then lining up and being cleared swiftly afterwards. It’s a very simple concept and one that we’ve all seen many times before. So, what does Cloud Breaker do differently? It adds a very restrictive timer to proceedings, causing one to have to move very fast indeed.
That timer doesn’t let up. It’s unrelenting until one finishes the stage, with each stage made up of numerous block puzzles. Rather swiftly Cloud Breaker becomes a pretty stressful game. It’s a fun title, at least, but one that requires sole attention. It’s surprising how easy it is to panic and mess up when solving a relatively simple puzzle, and things only get harder the further one progresses. At times it makes one wish for a more casual mode, just so that there’s time to enjoy the simple yet entertaining premise rather than be caught up in a rush of panic.
Fortunately it’s quite satisfying clearing one’s way through Cloud Breaker, but don’t expect to be an expert any time soon. Requiring some very speedy fingers as well as analytical skills, it’s punishing stuff. Perhaps worst of all, restarting from where one failed previously is restricted to a certain number of free attempts or via an in-app purchase. Otherwise, it’s back to the beginning again.
There’s no doubt that Cloud Breaker is a sadistic title but it’s also beguiling. Those in-app purchases feel a tad cheeky, keen to take advantage of one’s desperation to progress, but given that Cloud Breaker costs nothing to play otherwise it doesn’t seem quite so bad. Just try not to fling the iPhone against a wall in frustration. It’s going to be tempting.
