Chee.rs Review

Ever wanted to celebrate all of the little things in life? Chee.rs makes that easy to do by being able express appreciation, or “cheer," for just about anything in life. It’s a social media app that combines aspects of other popular rating and location check-in apps, and tries to be a way to express what is making its users happy.

There are many apps to rate food or check-in to places, but Chee.rs takes it one step farther and lets users publish cheers about anything. To help groups cheer about similar things, Chee.rs lets users create missions. Missions are collections of cheers that relate to certain topics. For example, the comfort food mission has lots of cheers for delicious and sinful looking food. Food definitely seems to be one of the best use cases for cheers, and some other missions don’t contain cheers that go together very well. I could see a handy use of missions being for a certain vacation destination, or for an eating tour of a city, like a pizza mission for New York City.

A good way to think of a cheer is as a public post about anything that has made a user happy. A new cheer can contain a picture, a person, a location, description, and be added to a mission. The picture can be taken with the camera or added from the camera roll, and the person can be from the phone’s contacts, Facebook, or Twitter. Once a cheer is published, other users can comment on it and favorite it. Favoriting a cheer increases it “cheerfluence” and the cheerfluence of its poster.

The biggest problem I have with Chee.rs is that there just aren’t very many people using it right now and some of the missions don’t have many recent cheers. If someone is nearby and is actively publishing cheers, though, then there’s a good chance that user will see something worth looking at.

Since Chee.rs isn’t just a food rating app or location check-in app, it’s hard to know what to use it for. I’m not sure whether to turn to it for food ratings, gift ideas, or entertainment recommendations. I like that it includes so many different topics, but others might wish that it stuck to just a few things. If more users add cheers in different missions, it could become a really good resource and place to turn to for useful recommendations.
