Over the past couple of years, the CARROT series of apps have done a great job of berating you while also motivating you to complete all manner of things from getting up on time to clearing your To-Do List. While its latest instalment, CARROT Weather, can’t change the weather (no matter how angry it gets), it is an entertaining way to get the facts.
Starting out, there’s a choice to go with your current location or to pick out a different place, a small but important touch. As soon as you pick a place, you get the full grumpy CARROT experience. While some voice intros can be simply ‘weather forecasted’, there’s also the inclusion of such delights as ‘I’ve got a collection of 6,241 fingers that were lost to frostbite’ to indicate that, yes, it’s pretty cold in Chicago right now.
Alongside such treats are the usual bevy of weather related facts. There’s the all important temperature, along with a feels like temperature. A set of icons explain how things will break down on a day by day basis, with a small hint of what’s to come along with expected temperatures. Swipe to the left and you get details on the short term precipitation risk, with another swipe taking you to what to expect on a hourly basis.
The bulk of information, however, comes from swiping up and checking out the more detailed forecast. There, you can check out humidity, pressure, visibility, when the sun rises and sets, as well as a brief overview of subsequent days. It’s convenient stuff.
So far, so very regular weather app, right? I doubt you’ve used a weather app that offers secret locations to unlock though, which is precisely what CARROT Weather offers to ensure that it can be a genuinely fun app. Keep poking CARROT’s eye for instance and you unlock the Robopocalypse. Other unlocks come from checking things on certain dates or looking up forecasts in a certain way. It’s fun to dig around for them and see what makes CARROT tick.
So, it’s a practical app but it’s also a fun one. While CARROT Weather might be a little pricier than other weather apps, that’s enough to make it a more tempting proposition than most. Who’d have thought checking the weather could be enjoyable?
