CardDrop - Goodbye Business Cards Review

There are plenty of apps that store and collect business cards, but CardDrop is a little bit different from the rest. While it’s possible to scan unlimited business cards for free, users can also drop them off as public or private cards for anyone to pick up later.

To get started, users must either sign in with Linkedin or Email. Once inside, users can immediately drop their card or tap on the options menu located in the left corner. The menu contains such features as a card scanner, a contact section, an area to store cards, a section to create a card and drop locations.

When it’s time to create a card, the app allows for importing information from Linkedin or entering it in manually. Users can also add social media accounts. After a card is created, tap on the Drop button to leave it at their location. Users can then add tags to their drops to help others identify it and even leave a brief message.

After dropping a card, just tell the other person to pick it up on CardDrop’s website. All they need to remember is the face of the person who they met and the location. Other people can also request cards, and a notification will pop up inside the app for approval. Additionally, the security of being able to drop a card off privately is a nice feature.

The scan feature seems to work decently, but it does take awhile. It is designed to send the user’s latest business card and a personal note automatically to the card holder’s email, and I didn’t see a way to prevent it from sending out this information. Their information is then saved to the Contacts section in the app.

CardDrop is a neat concept, but it could use some tweaks to make it better. There’s no way to personalize cards with pictures, videos and designs to make them stand out, there’s not a QR code option for those who may want to share business cards instantly, it could use more efficient contact organization and I didn’t find a way to export cards or even sync them between all devices.

While I like the concept of dropping cards and picking them up later, the available features just don’t stand out enough for me to replace this app with the business card app that I already have installed on my iPhone. For that reason, I suggest users to download cautiously and know that there are other free and paid options out there that offer more.
