The App Store is loaded with brick breaking games, but the problem is that they all are basically the same. They do little to break away from the traditional mold until recently. A new game called Brickout Zero Gravity takes the genre to a different level and gives fans of this game something to smile about again.

The obvious concept behind this game is that there isn’t any gravity. The bricks essentially float on the screen as players continue to hit them with a realistic tilting bat. The fun doesn’t stop there because there are enemies, obstacles and powerups that make things more exciting.

To get started, players can tap on the RCA cable to play in monochrome to enjoy the game’s retro style if they desire. It’s then time to select one or two players and a difficulty level that ranges from easy to hard. To play the game, simply tap on the screen and swipe to move the bat. Brickout Zero Gravity runs at 60 FPS so the gameplay is quite responsive and smooth.

If landscape mode doesn’t seem appealing, just rotate the iOS device to portrait mode to play. The game can also be paused and rotated—making the screen perfect for left or right-handed players. One feature that I enjoyed the most is the option to go back and adjust the bat velocity if things just don’t feel right.

What makes Brickout Zero Gravity stand out over all the other brick breaking games is that it has plenty of challenging and non-traditional obstacles. Whether gamers are enjoying one of the 100 single player levels or battling it out with friends in the 50 two player levels, the game never has a dull moment. There are 10 different types of bricks to break, 10 challenging enemies, 12 bonus items and plenty of obstacles like exploding blocks, laser shots and spinning disks that can either help or hurt gamers.

Scores are stored in Game Center and locally, and they can also be shared on Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, there aren’t any achievements or objectives to complete which hurts the replay value some. Additionally, more modes like level-based or endless would help keep the replay value high.

Overall, Brickout Zero Gravity is quite a treat. I had way more fun than expected playing through all the levels, and the 90s style pixel graphics are a nice touch. Whether gamers are looking to play for a few minutes or a couple hours, it has a little something for everyone.
