Astro Golf is a futuristic sci-fi spin on the mini golf genre that takes players off the putting greens and into outer space. They'll make their way through various stages of the “course” while unlocking different robot characters and upgrading their ball with power-ups and special abilities.

The course, in this case, is actually a large spaceship. Play begins in the Dock and progresses through the rest of the ship, including the Bridge, Engine Room and Cargo Hold. Bonus Levels are also made available at different points in the game.

Gameplay in Astro Golf is relatively simple. Players touch their robot ball and pull down to increase the strength of their swing, while sliding left and right to align the direction of their stroke. Releasing the ball sends it flying off in the appropriate direction, bouncing into walls and obstacles along the way. Players score points for getting the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible, as well as for picking up bonus targets along the way. When each level is completed players are awarded coins based upon their time, number of strokes, and bonus points earned on the hole.

Astro Golf has a variety of power ups and special abilities for the player to purchase using the coins that have been earned, and coins may also be purchased with in-app purchases. While in-app purchases aren’t necessary to complete the game, they certainly can help players progress through the levels quicker. Players will also discover that simply getting one’s ball into the hole is not always the only goal of a level, as there may be other requirements to meet (hitting a switch, finding a secret area, etc.) before being able to progress to the next round.

Astro Golf is a beautifully rendered 3-D game with lots of lighting and smoke effects. Sometimes the interface “lags” a bit as a user swipes their finger trying to align the ball and the course, but this gets easier as they spend more time in the game. As is sometimes the case with 3-D games, the camera angle occasionally gets in an awkward position such as behind a door or wall, but this doesn’t happen often enough to be much of a distraction. Astro Golf's music is very minimalistic but fitting for the sci-fi motif, and the sounds effects are all very well done.

The developers have planned Astro Golf as the first in a four-part series, so fans can look forward to more golfing goodness in the future. With all of the challenges, obstacles, and upgrades available, players who like mini golf games will find Astro Golf is definitely up to par.
