A Leaf in My Hair Review

A Leaf in My Hair is a super-cute and endearing universal story book about a hedgehog with a leaf caught in his hair and how he deals with this predicament. Readers interact with this story by tapping the text to hear the narration play and then watch the animations which bring this story to life.

My son and I enjoy this story about Jarvis the Hedgehog, who finds himself with a leaf caught in hair and all the different ways he tries to remove it, as he can’t quite reach it to simply pull it out.

My boy really likes this story as he is smitten by hedgehogs, having touched one at an exhibit at our local library. It is very cute and fun to watch Jarvis try to remove this leaf and I like how this is a simple story about a day in Jarvis’s life that my son can relate to as Jarvis tries many ways get to this leaf, often with a lot energy and running around a park, much like my little boy.

I am not always fan of overly computer-generated 3D images in storybooks, but I really like the animations offered here; they are bright, colorful, and with a very good effect, as hedgehogs have a great look and texture to translate into 3D.

This application is nicely designed as well. As the text pages are acted out by Jarvis, the reader learns a lot about storytelling since these actions are expressed, first with words and then with actions. Watching Jarvis follow through and demonstrate the verbs used in the sentences of this story makes this an excellent tale for kids learning English as a second language as well.

We both love the last page of this book a great deal as the relationship between Jarvis and the leaf is revealed in a way that the reader will first not expect, something that really made my son happy, asking simply for “again” with a smile, and is now talking about hedgehogs even more in his daily life than before. It is also nice that this tale ends with a worn-out Jarvis sleeping comfortably, making this a nice bedtime story as well.
