1945 Ace Destroyer

I’ve never disliked a WWII fighter game… until now. Oversimplistic graphics, no lives (2 hits you’re dead and start over), and choppy movement make Yar’s Revenge more appealing. If it got a major overhaul it would be a fun game, but not right now.

Summary
1945 Ace Destroyer attempts to make a jump into the WWII gaming genre by making you the pilot of the classic P-51D Mustang. The game has a great looking style which could draw you in if you’re checking it out in the App store. Unfortunately, you can neither judge a book by its cover, nor a game from its screenshots. In spite of the cool factor, the game underwhelmingly met my expectations. And that makes me sad, because I love this genre so much.

Overview
Starting the game you’re met with a simple screenshot of some tough looking guy dressed strangely un-American sending you into the suicide mission of defeating an enemy air force and navy all by your lonesome. It’s really quite hopeless, you know. While this game is very unrealistic in its play, it’s realistic in the sense that you only get one shot at something like this. Take one shot and you shake it off, but one more and you’re going down to Davie Jones’ Locker.

What would make this game better?
Improve the controls. In this flying game tilting up moves you up, and tilting down moves you down. This is counterintuitive to every other flying game I’ve played. I looked, but could not find any options to correct this.

Improve the gameplay. Make the play smoother. It looks 8-bit. Mario moved better.

Give a brother (or sister) a chance and throw some real endurance with power-ups our way. Or give us some lives and the option to continue from where we were shot down.

Finally, there’s no purpose to this game. I advanced three levels and played for 5 minutes without shooting a single thing. In this game, Obama’s plan of passivity gets you just as far as Bush’s plan of shoot first and ask questions later.

Conclusion
If the developers throw this baby into the hanger and do some serious work on her she’ll be flying high. Until then, keep this girl grounded.
