Combining the traditional idea of live programming with plenty of on-demand video content, 120 Sports is a fine amalgamation of ways to provide expert commentary on various sporting events. Even better, it's entirely free - albeit heavily ad-supported - making it quite the no-brainer for sports fans.

Clearly laid out, the app offers up a selection of stories each day that relate to sports such as MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA Tour, NCAA Football, and numerous others. In each case, the story has a short video analyzing the news, along with images, external news articles, and popular tweets about the situation. It's just enough to be a useful snapshot of what's being discussed, although at times it makes one wish there was more expansive video content.

120 Sports bolsters its content with live programming that's offered each night, as well as the choice to follow certain athletes or check out what's currently trending. It's fairly varied stuff and quite useful as a way to keep up-to-date with what's going on quite quickly.

There are a couple of downsides, though. For one thing, there's no way to interact with content such as by providing comments - something that would have been great with contentious issues. More importantly, there's a ton of advertising in the way of mostly everything. That's somewhat understandable given 120 Sports' free nature but it makes one wish for a way of opting out via an in-app purchase. Extended use of the app makes it all the more intrusive.

Despite such issues though, 120 Sports is a cool idea. It's a great snapshot of important sporting issues and the live programming is worth checking out each day. For free, it's hard to be too critical here.
