If you've seen Coin Party: Carnival Pusherleaping up the App Store charts and been confused about its appeal, you obviously didn't spend as much of your youth in arcades as I did.

In a similar fashion to slots games, pusher games allow players to experience for free what would otherwise be considered gambling by most people and jurisdictions. You're playing for points, not profit, and the main game mechanic is incredibly simple yet strangely soothing at the same time.

Happily, we can still give you some pointers on how to enjoy your time with Coin Party: Carnival Pusher. Read on for all the tips and tricks you can shake a stick at -- or maybe drop a coin on, in this case.

The name of the game

If you've never seen a coin pusher in real life, it is a simple game with one or more moving shelves and a playing field full of coins or tokens. You drop a coin onto the top part of the playing field, and the shelves push that coin into the others. The object is to have more coins or tokens slide off the end and into your possession than you drop in, which is why in their purest, old school form, coin pushers were gambling devices.

Coin Party: Carnival Pusher is the same idea but in a virtual sense. You start with a certain number of coins that regenerates over time (quickly while online, more slowly when logged out). drop them onto the playing field with a tap and try to score points by pushing other coins off the bottom edge. There are also a host of powerups and bonuses that wouldn't be possible in real life.

BONUS TIP:Placement matters. The game glosses over this somewhat, but the coins utilize realistic physics, so you want to place them exactly where you want them to push into the massed coins on the playing field, and preferably when the shelf is drawn back or else they might end up stacked on top of other coins. And beware the sides, because coins or prizes that fall off the sides don't count.

Power up to pile up points

On the left side of the screen, you'll see a meter that slowly fills as you score points. When full, that will activate one of a number of powerups that can help you clear coins quickly and rack up prizes and other bonuses as well.

Here's a short guide to the different powerups:

  • Coin Cannon: Fires a series of coins at the playing field from spots above the shelf.
  • Coin Quake: Shakes the playing field and gradually migrates coins toward the scoring edge.
  • Coin Shield: Gently pushes coins in from the sides of the playing field and keeps them from returning there for a short period of time.
  • Mega Dozer: Turns the shelf into a much larger, stronger version for one big push.
  • Tornado: Somewhat self-explanatory.

Note that you can also earn free powerups from time to time that you can access from the potion icon in the bottom-left corner. Just tap once there and tap again on the powerup of your choice.

Several ways to free coins

it's inevitable that at some point while playing Coin Party: Carnival Pusher, you're going to run out of coins. When that happens, you have three choices. The first is simply to wait, preferably while logged in since coins regenerate faster that way.

You'll also often have an option to watch a video for free coins, one that only appears when you are running low. Simply tap the icon that appears at the bottom of the screen and you're good to go.

Finally, you can also purchase more coins with real money. Tap the coin icon in the upper-left corner once to open up the option screen, then again on the shop to see your IAP options.

Whether you choose to spend some money or keep it a free pastime, Coin Party: Carnival Pusher can be unusually addictive, so don't be surprised if you get sucked in by the rhythmic clanking of its virtual coins.
