Now that we're well into the pleasant, warmer months, it's time to start making the most of the great outdoors. Spring and summer are ideal times for a bit of trekking or exploration.

You don't have to go it alone, though. There are plenty of apps to help complement whatever adventures you get up to this summer, even if you don't have a cell phone signal. We're here to highlight the best of the best.

Cairn

We've mentioned Cairn in past articles because it's just that good. It is the ultimate hiking safety app. Cairn lets you keep loved ones back in civilization updated on your adventures, provides offline topographic maps, and even features a community-maintained map that shows areas where cell phone coverage can be found. Easy to use, you won't want to go on another trek without it.

Wild Edibles
Forage

Okay, first a word of advice - don't go out and start eating things in the forest that might have identical poisonous cousins unless you're a trained foraging expert. The app will warn you of look-alikes, but a little extra caution is always a good idea.

With that said, Wild Edibles Forage is a neat little tool for identifying edible plans you stumble across in the wild. Using a database by a number of experts, you can track plants by region, or use the nifty map to record where you find plants along your travels.

Map My Hike

Hiking burns a lot of calories, so it's always satisfying to go back and see all of the hard work you did after Map My Hike tracks your entire journey. But the app's robust community options give you access to plenty of nearby trails traveled by other local hikers, giving you plenty of inspiration for your next trip.

Ramblr

Ramblr is the perfect way to record all of your memories from your outdoor adventures, whether you're hiking, kayaking, or on a prolonged fishing trip. You can use maps to record the places you visited, and place pictures, videos, and diary entries accordingly so you never forget a thing.
