Using a Sonos device is now a little simpler, as the need for a BRIDGE device has been removed with the launch of Sonos Controller 5.1. This major update means that devices can now connect directly via an existing WiFi network, meaning a wired connection to the router or a Sonos BRIDGE is no longer required.

This doesn't mean that the need has gone completely for the BRIDGE, however. In situations where WiFI doesn't reach every room you want to put a speaker, or where Sonos 3.1 and 5.1 home theater setups are being used, Sonos still recommends the use of a direct connection to the router or the use of a BRIDGE.

For those who use Sonos, the Sonos Controller app can be downloaded from the App Store now for free.
