I think it's absolutely essential if you want to keep a decent reader base. The money will come with the base regardless.

This is also a terrible thing for honest developers whose game may get shut out from a review by paying competitors. It is also terrible for consumers, who lose trust with reviewers across the board. This is the same thing that scares me so much about app store 'gaming' (like manipulative price rises and reductions). If consumers lose trust, then they will treat anything unfamiliar with suspicion. The will fall back to relying on existing brands and innovation will suffer. Our consumers need to know the price, and they need to know the quality, this is fundamental to making a purchase without feeling screwed. As a developer we strongly support your stance on this.
