Prevail, a galaxy exploration game by British developer JohnnyTwoShoes, was announced over five years ago. The game drew a lot of attention, drawing in dedicated fans with its promise of sidescrolling action and seemingly endless space exploration. Based on released footage, exciting space battles frequently gave way to more peaceful exploration--the game was shaping up to be a rich experience that is often so hard to find on mobile.

But sadly the game seemed to have fallen into development hell, with updates few and far between until the team announced in 2015 that work on Prevail was still underway. Most recently we were told that the game, save for a few minor bugs, was ready to be sent to Apple in January. Today the game appeared on the App Store with no fan fare, a minimalist description: "Explore a cartoon adventure," and a $4.99 price tag.

Folks who have downloaded the game suspect it's a flawed or incomplete build, as the game has many bugs that hinder the gameplay experience. Rob Funnell over at TouchArcade was able to provide some slight clarification in a forum post after getting in touch with former JohnnyTwoShoes co-founder, Max Scott-Slade:

I don't want to go into details yet until I have fully spoken to Max, but the bottom line is this is a pretty complicated and sensitive issue. I'd greatly appreciate if people could temporarily stop speculation over the nature of the release until the article has gone up, and also for anyone to perhaps hold off trying to contact either Max, Josh, or any of the other people related to the game again until I've spoken to him in person. If you have any issue with this, feel free to PM me on here or the Discord for the time being. And if you are on the fence in regards to downloading Prevail, I'd recommend to hold off for a few days, but entirely down to you. Thanks guys.

It looks as though we'll be getting some more details soon, but given the game's price and the reported bugs thus far, it's likely worth holding off on downloading the game for now.
