Adult Swim’s Pocket Mortys owes a lot to Pokemon, so if you’ve played any of the franchise, you should know roughly what to expect.

If not, then we have a bevy of tips and tricks to get you started on your path to catching all the Mortys.

Knowing the layout

Each level has a Rick to beat - a form of superior trainer. Beat Rick, gain a badge, and generally feel smug about yourself. Along the way, you’ll come across Morty trainers that are keen to duke it out.

Those Morty trainers can be dodged though. You can sneak around them carefully, avoiding a fight. You don’t really want to do this as every fight means more experience for your Mortys, but every once in a while, it won’t do any harm.

Keeping Mortys happy

Finding wild Mortys isn’t like in Pokemon where you wander around the tall grass. Instead, you have to chase them down till you wear them out, then fight them, before unleashing a Manipulator Chip to catch them. Do this often so you collect up plenty of new Mortys.

Run out of room in your group? Don’t worry about it. Any new Mortys are sent to the Citadel to be picked up later on.

Try to keep a varied bunch of Mortys in your lineup. Ideally, you want at least one of each type (rock, paper, scissors) so that you can throw them into battle as and when they’re at their most effective.

Don’t forget - rock beats scissors, paper beats rock, and scissors beats paper. It’s so simple yet important!

Split the experience. Even if your Morty is only used for one turn, they’ll gain some experience from the battle. Try to swap out as many Mortys as possible, so they all gain from a fight.

You can combine two of the same type of Morty, when you’re back at the Citadel. Do this often. You’ll get a stronger Morty that way and who wants duplicates anyway?
