Just in case your tower defense itch hasn't been scratched quite yet, developer Trendy Entertainment has announced that the iOS version of their latest game, Dungeon Defenders: First Wave, will be available in the App Store next month. The title, which is tied to the Dungeon Defenders franchise launching on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, will focus largely on tower defense, but will add some action gaming and RPG elements as well.

The game won't follow the standard tower defense formula though, as players can take control of a specific hero character and run around the battlefield. See some minions slipping by your defenses? Then by all means give them a whack with your axe or a blast from your staff and send them to meet their maker. You can also use your character to set up defenses and make changes on the fly, allowing you to adapt to the changing battlefield. It feels a bit like the PSN game Pixeljunk Monsters, but with more direct control over the outcome of the fight. Players will also be able to port their character from First Wave into the Dungeon Defenders PC game, but the same feature won't appear on the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the title.

Trendy has also announced that the game will be powered using the Unreal Engine 3, which should hopefully translate into some top-notch graphics. Couple this with Retina Center support and we could have quite a pretty little game indeed on our hands. A word of warning though, the game will only support iOS devices that are 3rd generation and up, so if you have an older model phone or Touch then you won't be able to play it. Sounds like a perfect excuse to upgrade!

Dungeon Defenders: First Wave is currently scheduled to arrive in mid-December at a price of $2.99. For those who like to try before you buy, a lite version will also be available for free.
