In the latest version of iTunes (9.x), and the latest iPhone firmware (3.1.2), the iPhone stores a copy of the application map within iTunes itself. Your computer calculates the application map, whilst the iPhone makes small adjustments to it when modifications are made. This has resolved the long standing issue of the Watchdog Timeout (WDT) problem.

I have managed to install more than 400 applications on the iPhone 3G 16GB without having even the slightest delay in SpringBoard startup. As opposed to previous versions, when the iPhone starts up it is only slowed down by additional daemon processes rather than an integrity check of the application map.

For those trying to troubleshoot, if you installed lots of applications from Cydia and iTunes/AppStore which then resulted in you being stuck at the Apple Logo with a spinning wheel, the problem is not associated with the application map. If you have the Apple Logo, a black screen and then a spinning wheel taking you back to the Apple Logo, then it is a problem with the application map. You shouldn't experience the latter for installing too many applications anymore. It's more likely to be another issue.

Again, I've just tested this on a 3GS and the most it will install before crashing is 450. I didn't call you a liar, I simply said that if you can't present hard evidence then iPhone developers like myself should take your claims to be false. See when we scour Google for cases to review, particularly in this instance, and I need to check whether your claims are true to develop a WDT timeout fix, its very, very annoying when you can't present any evidence of what your saying.

I've scoured every inch of the internet, but the first thing that always appears is your post. So what I'm doing is proving your claims aren't true to shorten the time developers need to get accurate information. They can just look at this post and then disregard it when it appears first in Google.

You're evidently immature, and it's apparent that your penis is very small for you to need to respond with hostility when I suggest what your saying is false. If you have installed 500 apps, then install Veency and Categories, and show us the number from there. Otherwise, people that read your post should consider it an "over-exaggeration" if not false altogether until you present us with hard evidence.

So far on the internet, only you and one other person have claimed to install more than 400, one man said he installed 400 (but again a nice round number, indicating over-exaggeration). You however, have claimed to have installed 500. You've claimed to install the highest number of applications than any other iPhone user who has given that information, in the whole world. So, again, either evidence or what your saying is false. Either way, I don't need to know how you did it because I know that you didn't do it.

I've decided through researching it, that it's impossible to add more than 320 applications and maintain a stable SpringBoard. After this it won't boot properly at all. I've managed to install up to 600 applications but SpringBoard will not load afterwards. I'm currently experimenting with a tool called uicache so that I can make all of the Applications appear after changing the name of the Applications folder to make it boot into SpringBoard.

Therefore, unless the previous user presents evidence of their claims, then what they are saying is false, they cannot have succesfully installed more than 320 applications on an iPhone - so they cannot have installed 500. Admittedly, on a 3GS, this might be slightly higher because it can generate the application map faster up to 1.5x as fast (so that would be 480 apps on the 3GS at a prediction), but the same process known as the WDT or Watchdog Timer terminates SpringBoard long before than can finish with 500 applications.

I can definately confirm 320 applications as the stable limit for iPhone applications on the 16GB 3G model, tested on 7 different iPhones each with different setup and applications. The previous user's claims are again false, please present hard evidence.

How did you install 500 applications and keep your iPhone stable enough to use without it re-springing endlessly? I want to know because I'm working on a fix for the 1000's of users who are suffering from problems with their application map.

it doesn’t take that long...I have over 500 apps...and they were all installed until I started going thru and deleting them...the sad part is that you have to power down and power up for the unshown apps to appear...and if you clear the last page that page will fill up...but it's a pain to do...so I have to reboot it now and then as I clear out the crap apps

I'm very pleased, I'd feared I'd need to buy the 3Gs to get more room.
I think they thought too many apps would make it too slow. it certainly makes syncing very slow.

You can add unlimited apps. You just have to search for the ones that don't show up in spotlight

Excellent. More places to store those apps I never use more than once after installing. I really only have 3 pages of apps I use regularly.

"Why add only 2 more pages? Why not just allow for an infinite number of pages? And even though there are only 11 pages, why allow users to install more than what you can display?"

My hunch is that infinite pagination would require a corresponding potential for infinite navigation. This is something you can accomplish with UIScrollView, but the home screen instead uses UIPageControl, which does not tidily scale past a certain number of page indicators. (According to Apple's documentation, the number past which things get wonky is 20 pages, so it's anyone's guess why they stopped at 11)

The other obvious answer is simply that only app nuts like us would ever even manage to fill 11 pages in the first place. I'm sure the average user would never get past two or three.
