Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive an 18-wheeler through the tiny, canal-lined streets of Amsterdam? Maybe you want to see how a school bus handles in the Alps? In that case, Driving School 2016 might just be the game you’ve been looking for.

It’s not as easy as it sounds, though. As a driving school simulator, you’ll have to pay careful attention to the rules of the road if you want to succeed. Luckily we have a few tips that’ll help you do just that.

Safety first

Driving School 2016 pays pretty close attention to detail, which means you’re being tested even before you hit the road.

At the start of each level, be sure to buckle your seatbelt. If it’s dark, switch on those headlights. Raining? You got it. Turn on the windshield wipers. This will net you a nice bump in experience points - a useful buffer to have in case you have any run-ins with unwitting pedestrians. I mean curbs. What?

Slow and steady wins the race

This isn’t Midtown Madness. Driving School 2016 requires a light touch on the gas.

Make sure you pay attention to the speed limit signs as you’re cruising downtown. It’s best to stay just under the speed limit - you are in driving school, after all.

You’ll lose 50 experience points if you go over, and an additional 50 for every few seconds you maintain that speed. Yikes!

Use your turn signals all of the time

Like the strictest of driver’s ed instructors, Driving School 2016 will punish you if you don’t use your turn signals in every single situation. Signal when leaving or pulling into a parking space, signal when you change lanes, signal at a red light, signal at a stop sign. It’s easy to do, but harder to remember when you’re in video game mode, where rules tend to be a bit looser.

Be aware of your surroundings

Much like real life, the true danger usually tends to be other drivers. The other cars on the road are also liable to human error, so watch out. Sometimes drivers will turn into the wrong lane at a red light, or fall asleep at the wheel while waiting for the lights to change. Go slowly, and don’t be afraid to lay on the horn if you have to.

You’ll also need to be on the lookout for cyclists and pedestrians. Watch out for the bikers’ blinking reflectors, and approach them slowly. It’s okay to pass them, just be careful. The cities are also littered with crosswalks, so be careful of any folks meandering across the street as you approach. There are no in-game lawsuits, but you will take a hit to your experience points if you squish someone.

Above all, when it comes to Driving School 2016, practice makes perfect. Your first few runs might be better categorised as disasters, but don’t let that stop you. Soon you’ll racing around like a pro (within the speed limit, of course).
