Posted by on January 29th, 2015
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

The batch of pixelated goodness known as The Sandbox is no stranger to update goodness, and its latest build brings in yet more interesting features.

The latest update reveals a collaboration with Robery Kirkman’s Invincible comics characters.

★ THE SUPER-HEROES CAMPAIGN ★
Battle against villains and restore peace in the world with the heroes from Invincible! Heroes Team! Punch enemies, solve puzzles, and make your heroes work as a team by toggling between them!

Discover the incredible powers of our 4 new super-heroes elements: Dupli-Kate, Invincible, Rex-Splode and Monster Girl! (Based on the comic book series entitled “Invincible” created by Robert Kirkman, Corey Walker and Ryan Ottley)

We had an opportunity to review The Sandbox a while back, and loved it.

The update is out now, with the game available for free (with optional in-app purchases) on the App Store. The new update trailer is below:

Great news!

After a successful Kickstarter Pro Pinball: Timeshock!, an upcoming title from Barnstorm Games, will be arriving on the App Store later this week. That in itself is awesome.

Ahead of that, we are proud to announce that we have a new trailer for the game — exclusively on 148apps.com!

The game is based on the popular 90s game series Pro Pinball.

Barnstorm Development Chief Adrian Barritt mentions the nostalgia that made the redevelopment possible. “It’ll be great to have Timeshock! back in the hands of players again; the Kickstarter campaign has demonstrated that there is so much nostalgia for this title both from us and fans of the original Pro Pinball series of games,” he says. “We are bringing the definitive pinball simulation to a new generation of platforms and players, starting today with iOS. The Retina screens and tactile nature of the iPhone and iPad are such a perfect fit, the game has never been realized in such stunning clarity before.”

As noted, the game is due out this week. It will be available in two tiers, Standard ($2.99) and Deluxe ($6.99) on the App Store.

The trailer is below:

The Sims Freeplay is awesome, but as any fan will tell you there’s no such thing as having too many outfits – in real life or otherwise. Thankfully, Electronic Arts feels the same.

The game’s new update adds what Electronic Arts describes as the “most requested” feature in its history: Sunset Mall.

Per the App Store page, Version 5.11.0 brings:

• Grab your besties and come on down to the Sunset Mall, there are over 16 new shops bursting with new outfits
• Dresses, shoes, coats, and more! Your Sims never looked so good, with over 500 new clothes for all age groups
• Show off the latest trends on the Catwalk with the new Modelling Hobby. Strike a pose to unlock new shops
• Strike! Meet up with friends and try your hand in the Bowling Hobby. Knock down those pins to unlock the Juice Bar!
• Take your new crush on a first date to the Burger Bar and order a milkshake for two – unlocked when you complete the Sunset Mall Quest
• Kick into healthy habits with the new Juice Bar, and slurp up a tasty refreshing juice with you and your friends – master every move in the Bowling Hobby to unlock it!
• Experience Lunar New Year with your family! Hang up lanterns, and cheer on the lion dancers in the Lunar New Year Quest – coming Feb 14

We had a ball formally reviewing The Sims Freeplay, so much so that we put together a concise gameplay guide, too. The Sims Freeplay remains free (with in-app purchases) on the App Store.

2k and Firaxis have formally announced an upcoming game: Sid Meier’s Starships.

The new game is part of the Sid Meier series, and specifically expands upon Civilization: Beyond Earth‘s science fiction universe. The game is described as a turn-based strategy game that makes the player the fleet commander ultimately in pursuit of peace.

Sid Meier (who serves as creative development chief at Firaxis) talks about experiences with regards to the new game. “When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth. What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?” he says. “My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.”

There’s no word on pricing yet, but Sid Meier’s Starships is scheduled to drop in “early 2015.”

Fans of GAMEVIL‘s relatively new MORPG Darkness Reborn are in for a treat: the game is getting a January update.

For fans of the evil adolescent comedy Mean Girls, this is great news: Mean Girls: The Game is set to be released on iOS.

Developed by the appropriately named So Much Drama Studios, the game is cheekily described as a “tiara defense” game; it’s all about maintaining the crew’s rep.

Mean-Girls-Mobile-Game-Announced

Designed as an easily accessible ‘tiara-defense’ game, Mean Girls finds the original Plastics at peace with their world, when a new upstart Plastics clique attempts to take control of North Shore High School by piecing together the broken Spring Fling Tiara. Players can select from eight of their favorite Mean Girls characters — Cady, Regina, Gretchen, Karen, Janis, Damian, Aaron, and Kevin, each with their own distinct boost abilities — and all the cliques from the cafeteria, to help defeat opponents and complete each level.

Additional Mean Girls game features include:

Location, Location, Location: Play through movie-inspired locations such as the North Shore High School Cafeteria, Classroom, Football Field, and the Basketball Court.
Power Ups: Collect hump day treats, Kalteen bars, peppermint foot cream, pieces of the tiara, and improve popularity to gain points and boost power ups.
Let It Out Honey: Burn your friends on Facebook with your high scores and let them have it in the Burn Book.

There’s no word on the exact time or price just yet, but we’re keeping an eye on this one.

Goat Simulator, the insanely popular game from Coffee Stain, is getting a big discount – 60% off, to be specific. That brings the price down to $2.99 for a limited time.

Goat Simulator, as the name implies, is all about living life – as a goat. A very testy, destructive goat that’s determined to wreak as much havoc as possible on a village.

We had an opportunity to review Goat Simulator in all its weirdness last year. There isn’t any word as to how long the sale will last, so grab it while it’s hot. As noted, it’s on sale for $2.99 on the App Store.

Procrastinate Much? 24me’s New Procrastination Fighter Feature Might be of Use

Posted by on January 12th, 2015
iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad

24me, the well-regarded, award-winning personal assistant utility, recently received an update that adds a Procrastination Fighter tool: a smart algorithm that studies the user’s traits and helps find times in which overdue tasks might be performed.

The update brings:

* Procrastination Fighter: 24me finds the right time during the day to help you with overdue tasks.
* Personalized Calendar – choose your own photos to be displayed on the calendar.
* New repeat rules – weekdays / weekends.
* Temperatures for today and tomorrow on the Task list next to the forecasted weather.
* Completely redesigned Settings and new Smart Alerts menu.
* Bug fixes and performance improvements.

We had an opportunity to review an earlier build of 24me a while back, and mostly liked it. The app is available for free on the App Store.

Development house Starship is getting closer to releasing its new imagination game, Playworld Superheroes.

Some game details, per a recent press release:

Set in a city garden littered with junk and unloved cast-offs, each chapter of super-powered playtime begins in the Playworld treehouse, a crafting hub in which the game’s themes are realized. Players must defeat playful enemies on the ground in intense moment-to-moment action, jumping back to the real world to craft new tools and gadgets to level up their powers. Would-be heroes must then take to the skies to overcome their greatest challenge yet. Armed only with their imagination, the player must skip between two worlds to save them both in a Hollywood blockbuster-styled game of their own creation.

Playworld Superheroes has been teased before, but now we get to see a fresh trailer with a bit of gameplay while we wait for its release – which should be fairly soon.

Inconceivable! The Princess Bride – The Official Game Comes to iOS Devices

Posted by on January 9th, 2015
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

“As you wish!”

If that fading bellow doesn’t make you take notice immediately, get a VHS player and wait until the end of this joyous announcement.

Behold… we get Dread Pirate Roberts, Buttercup, Inigo Montoya, and the Giant Usually Known as Andre. Romance, action, rhyming, fire rats, riddles… and more.

Keeping up? The Princess Bride Game – based on the iconic cult movie and book of the same name – has come to mobile, specifically iOS devices.

We’re looking forward to giving this one a go. The Princess Bride – The Official Game is available now on the App Store for $3.99.

Yellow monkey Studios, the crew behind HUEBRIX and Finger Footie, is bringing a new gaming adventure to iOS called Socioball.

It looks like a sort of cross between one of those step-by-step programming games and something akin to golf. If golf involved getting a ball to some sort of teleporter pad, that is. Okay so it’s a bit odd, but it does look pretty interesting.

Socioball is scheduled to drop on the App Store next week on January 15.

An album sleeve that controls DJ software?

Why not?

Fact Magazine reports that a Kickstarted project is now available that brings together album art, djay 2, and touch technology to create an interesting result: the ability to manipulate the iOS-loaded software via physically touching the album cover itself.

The cover in question belongs to DJ Qbert’s new album, Extraterrestria. Using Bluetooth, one can use the interactive art (which looks like turntables) to control Qbert music or other songs on one’s device using the djay 2 app.

We reviewed djay 2 quite a while ago; and it’s currently available for $9.99 on the App Store. Extraterrestria itself will be shipping out to backers first, but some vinyl copies will be available to the masses through Thud Rumble.
