SlingPlayer Mobile

iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad
After almost a year of waiting for this app to hit the shelves, we wind up with a watered down version that all the other mobile platforms have already been enjoying for the same price they paid for a full featured version.

Nearly a year ago, Sling Media announced that they planned to bring Slingbox connectivity to the iPhone and iPod Touch. That makes sense, considering that the app is already available for Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian, and BlackBerry platforms. After being held up in the approval process for unconfirmed issues, we can now say that the wait is finally over!

According to our source at Sling Media:

“Apple will post our app (Wi-Fi only) on the iPhone Store between 9:01pm (PDT) Tuesday, May 12th and 3:01 AM (PDT) Wednesday May 13th.”

With Mothers Day right around the corner (Sunday, in case you forgot) I figured that it might be time to start planning out exactly what I’d be doing to show my mom that I appreciate everything she’s done and continues to do for me. The traditional ideas passed through my head: bring her out for dinner, treat her to a spa day, and of course, buy her flowers. This was all before my inner nerd took over and thought: what iPhone app could help me out with this.

fg_growth_small

If my mom were perhaps as tech savvy of a lady as, say Christine Morris, one of our excellent reviewers here at 148Apps.com, this could be a lot of fun. I’d load her phone up with various iPhone apps that would allow her to simplify the tasks in her day to day life along with games for her to play when she gets bored. Unfortunately, my mom just recently upgraded from her blue Nokia brick of a phone to whatever her carrier offered her for free this month.

The Rolando 2 website continues to reveal more information about the game as we get closer and closer to the launch of the title (Considering the game hasn’t been released yet or given an official release date, it’s safe to assume that each day that passes is at least one day closer to the launch of the game.) Since we last had a chance to take a look at ngmoco’s Rolando 2 website, five of the locked Rolando’s down bottom have been revealed and as of today a teaser trailer for the game has gone live (You can watch the trailer below!)

Over the weekend, Trent Reznor, front-man for Nine Inch Nails, received quite a bit of bad news from the App Store. It seems that the update to their app, nin: access, was denied.

The app is currently in the App Store, available for free, having already passed through the approval process once. The changes in this update? Well, they’d fix some of the bugs that have left many users giving the app a poor rating due to unexpected issues.

So what exactly was Apple’s reason for denying the update?

“Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple’s reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.”

This is in reference to the album “The Downward Spiral” made available through the app. Here’s what Trent had to say in response to the issue:

Last week, a member of a focus testing group broke his NDA and provided Joystiq with information and images of a previously unknown title called Mass Effect: Jacob’s Story for the iPhone and iPod Touch. What was made available at that time was that this game would follow right behind the highly anticipated Mass Effect 2 story-wise. You’ll be taking the roll of Jacob Taylor, “a biotic-powered super-soldier who stumbles across a plot to terrorize civilization’s greatest beacon of hope.” The final bit of information we were left with was that the game would last about 2 hours and cost $2.99.

peggle_header

Peggle is probably one of the most time consuming games that I’ve ever played. My first run in with it was during the download period of the Orange Box through Steam on my PC. In anticipation for the games to be unlocked, we were treated to a Valve specific version of the game that honestly kept me so occupied, I think I continued to play it instead of switching over to the other games that I had just plopped $50 down for.

flightcontrol

Firemint Games, the developers of the 148Apps five star rated game Flight Control, have just released their sales figures for the app while it held the #1 spot in the iTunes App Store. The period covered stretches from March 24th to April 25th 2009, which is a sizable amount of time for an app to hold that position.

Here’s some of the information from the report:

After the success of our last contest, we decided to look through our email and sort out all of the promo codes that developers had sent us to give away to our readers. Apparently our last competition caught the attention of quite a few developers and we have a hefty pile of codes to give out! While the last contest took place on the site itself, due to the sheer number of codes that we have to give out, we’ve decided to use our Twitter account to distribute them.

We know that not all of you have Twitter accounts, but considering the fact that it’s so easy to set up and some of the best iPhone apps released to date are Twitter apps, there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t jump onboard.

DEVELOPERS:
If you’d like to join the give-a-way, go to our promo code page to submit your app and we’ll add them to our list.

READERS:
Register a Twitter account or login in to your existing one then make sure you’re following @148Apps! You can check our timeline out here to see what we’re giving away and how.

Best of luck to everyone!

In just 10 months the iTunes App Store has gone from the doors just opening to 1 billion apps downloaded which happened just minutes ago. Everyone was excited to see that number ding 1 billion. Consumers were hoping to win the grand prize. All 37,000+ developers were glad that their apps continued to sell on the App Store. And those who have taken up the mantle of reporting on the happenings of the iPhone App community were excited to see another landmark reached.

Instead of rambling on and on about this landmark, we’ve got a few influential developers, marketers, and analysts who’ve put together their thoughts on Apple hitting the 1 billion mark.

As the number of applications in the iTunes App Store continues to grow, so does the demand for high quality reviews of the applications. Developers are always looking for sites to review their applications and 148apps.com is definitely high on their list. Each day we get dozens of emails from developers looking to have their application reviewed. While not all of them fit with what we’re trying to do at 148apps.com, the amount of worthwhile applications that we get has grown to the point where we need to expand our writer base to make sure that we can handle all of them. That’s where you come in.

Whether you’re new to the site or have been coming here for quite some time, we’d like you to consider writing for us. All you need is a love of iPhone applications and some free time to write reviews, we’ll take care of the rest. We supply all of our writers with promo codes for the applications that they review and the ability to pick which applications they review, allowing for those most interested in a particular application to be the one who reviews it.

To apply for a writing position with 148apps.com, simply email Bryan (at) 148apps (dot) com with your name, a little bit of information about yourself, and a writing sample. If you don’t have a writing sample prepared, grab your favorite application and do a review of it! No need to include pictures or anything, we’re just looking to see if your style fits in with our site.

With that said, I hope to hear from all of you soon and I look forward to possibly working with you in the near future!

Last week, I was lucky enough to receive a Slingbox and an ad-hoc copy of the latest build of the Slingbox iPhone app for review purposes. While I won’t be able to release a review of the app until it goes live, I’m thoroughly impressed.

Today, all over the internet there has been “an unconfirmed tip from a source close to Apple’s approval processes” claiming that the app had in fact been denied due to pressure from AT&T. The app is slated to allow use over 3G and WiFi, meaning that it would in fact be a bandwidth burden for AT&T, but considering the app already exists on the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phones which AT&T sure carries a few of, there’s no reason to believe this rumor to be true (even BGR agree’s!)

Brian Akaka, CEO and Founder of Appular just sent over a teaser for the latest game from Freeverse, Flick NBA Basketball. This is the third game in the Flick series (Bowling and Fishing with Baseball coming in the near future). The trailer doesn’t show much besides the court, with especially stunning reflection, but it’s enough to peak our interest so I dug a little deeper.

According to Carmen Pearson, Public Relations Manager for Gameloft, Assassin’s Creed for the iPhone & iPod Touch is “slated to hit the App Store by early next week”.

Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles

The game, which has no price as of yet, will once again place you in the shoes of Altair, Master Assassin for The Order of Assassins, as he attempts to retrieve “The Chalice” from the Templars in an effort to end the Crusades. According to IGN, “Assassin’s Creed for the iDevices is indeed largely based on Altair’s Chronicles, the DS prequel to the very first Creed game.”

The iPhone App Developers have a particularly awesome tool at their disposal: Promo Codes. Not only do these promo codes allow sites like 148apps to review all the apps we do, but they’re often used for contests as well. Primarily, we’ve been using Twitter as a way to give out promo codes for contests, but I’ll be honest with you, the response isn’t always that great. So in an attempt to include everyone who visits our site, we’re going to be expanding our giveaways onto the blog.

iphonesdkDevelopers and news outlets alike have been up in arms about the clarification made in the agreement signed by developers before receiving the SDK. Unfortunately, there have been some serious misconceptions about what, if anything, has actually changed and what it will mean for both the official development and jailbroken communities.

Section 3.2 Use of the SDK, paragraph (e) states:

(e) You will not, through use of the SDK or otherwise, create any Application or other program that would disable, hack or otherwise interfere with any security, digital signing, digital rights management, content protection, verification or authentication mechanisms implemented in or by the iPhone operating system software, iPod touch operating system software, this SDK, or other Apple software, services or technology, or enable others to do so.

The Oregon Trail is one of my all time favorite games and gameloft did an amazing job of remaking the game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the game yet, definitely check out our review.

While everyone is still excited about the apps recently launch, gameloft has decided to announce a prequel to their latest success entitled The Oregon Trail: Origins. Here’s the quick write-up we’ve received from gameloft:

Gameloft Announces The Oregon Trail: Origins Featuring Cave Men Going West

Grab your sticks and stones, take your woman by hair, and pray that you make it out West!

Before there were settlers, there were cavemen. Often forgotten, largely ignored, they paved the treacherous roads of the Oregon Trail before there was an Oregon Trail.

Gameloft’s newest title brings The Oregon Trail: Origins to all the wannabe Neanderthals of the 21st century. The game will be available for all platforms.

Check out Gameloft’s exclusive screens and follow our Twitter feed today for more game detail leaks: http://twitter.com/TheOregonTrail

We’re as excited as you are to check out this amazing new title and will keep you posted as more information breaks. We’ve got two great screenshots of the game after the break, so make sure to check them out!
