App Description

Warwick Greenwood JFC was formed in 2000 to cater for junior footballers living within its catchment area of Warwick, Greenwood and Hamersley. The former clubs of Warwick JFC and Northern Districts JFC amalgamated to form the new Club.

The former clubs had operated successfully for 30 and 25 years respectively, so why amalgamate? The numbers of children within the catchment areas fell gradually due to the ageing nature of the suburbs. Basically the kids had grown up! Both clubs had difficulty in fielding teams particularly in the Open Rules age groups (13 – 17 year olds) or the old sporting quandary of too many players for 1 team, too few for 2.

The idea of forming one club to better service our players’ needs came about through an alliance made in season 1998 of the 2 former clubs. Both had enough players to field half a 16 year old side, they came together and stayed together to be Premiers that season and continued on to win back to back Premierships 1998 &1999. They played their “home” games in the Warwick strip and “away” in Northern Districts’ colours, alternating which were worn during the finals. Their “home” games being played at both Penistone and Ellersdale. They were coached by Gary Dickie from Warwick and Managed by Northern Districts’ Garry Thompson. Both these gentlemen are life members of the Club, not only for their participation in this team but for many other years of service to the former clubs. The then Committee asked the players what they would like to be called and it was “Warwick Greenwood” so the name stuck and became the automatic choice of the new club’s name.

14 years on from the merge and Warwick Greenwood JFC continue to grow into a strong and vibrant club. With a strong committee backing our young athletes the club has evolved into a destination for young men and women to come and learn and enjoy the game of Football. With a big Auskick program providing the club with new talent every season means that WGJFC can field teams in every age group right up to and including Year 12’s, something some of the bigger clubs cannot claim.

Champion club of the year in 2013, WGJFC always strives to be the best place for our kids to play football in a fun and safe environment.

During this time the club has come up with some fantastic ideas and innovative plans to ensure the strength of the club continues long in to the future.

One of the main areas the club was looking to improve on was the way in which it was currently communicating with its players, members, supporters and sponsors.

With a forward thinking and a dynamic board the club was actively pursuing different methods which would enable them to improve on their existing communication channels.

After conducting a review of all the options available to them the club is pleased to announce the release of their first ever native mobile phone app for the iPhone.
