What's New

This app has been updated by Apple to use the latest Apple signing certificate.

This app is now included as a part of a whole program to teach all the important vowel spellings in early reading. This version includes pages with words that contain all the codes that have been taught for each vowel sound, including in the Sounds Have Letter Teams apps 1 through 5. In addition, when a new code is taught for one of the vowel sounds, it is made clear if the child has already learned another way the same vowel sound can be spelled. For example, when the child reaches this app, they have already learned that the sound /ee/ can be spelled by "ea (eat), "ee" (feet), and "e" at the end of six short words (he, be).

App Description

In this app, children learn all about the vowel-y digraphs "ay" and "oy", and the two sounds spelled by the letter "y" at the end of words. Each letter or letter team is introduced individually in a fun video followed by the opportunity to read and write words with that code. Then children choose the letter or team that can represent each isolated sound, followed by selecting the code that can spell the missing sound in words. The letter "y" is first taught as the sound /ie/ at the end of short words ("fly", "my", "sky"). Two lessons later, we teach that "y" is /ee/ at the end of words that already have a vowel ("happy", "penny", "sunny"). The next lesson includes a clear and simple explanation for why consonants are sometimes doubled before final "y" and what it means when they aren't. Bonus material in this app includes a separate introduction to the two sounds spelled by the letter team "ey" (like at the end of "they" and "valley") and a lesson about the team "ie" as /ee/ ("cookie", "candies", "field", "chief").

This app is designed be a part of the flow of the Sounds Have Letter Teams series. As each new code is learned, the introductory video makes it clear if the child has already learned another way to spell the vowel sound. For example, when the child learns about the team "oy", we point out that they have already learned that the team "oi" also spells the sound /oi/, like in "point" and "boil". The team "oy" is the way we spell this same sound at the end of words. Please go through the series in order if possible.
