Growers' Nation - planting the seeds locally for a more sustainable future
The Growers' Nation app enables you to discover which fruits, vegetables and other crops will grow well in your area, and when best to sow, plant and harvest them. You can also connect with other local growers to learn useful growing tips and share your knowledge.
The app uses a combination of openly accessible data (e.g. temperature, precipitation, elevation, slope, soil, etc.) made available through GEO (Group on Earth Observations) to link your location to the types of crops that will grow in your area. It also uses your location to connect you to people both locally and with similar sets of growing conditions around the world.
Key features:
• Advice on which plants grow well at your location
• Illustrations of when to sow, plant out and harvest your crops
• Connects you with other growers in your neighborhood or in similar growing environments around the world
• Collects growing and harvesting behavior from the users
• Learns from this collective behavior and presents the users with information that enables them to make better informed choices regarding when to sow, plant out and harvest their crops
Agriculture has a long history in the development of mankind. The “Growers' Nation” app harnesses the latest in science and technology to help improve agriculture and promote the growing of food in all locations, from urban spaces to smallholder farmers. Learning to live more sustainably is incredibly important in this current changing environment and this app represents one tool towards reaching this goal.
We’d like to see a future where children grow up understanding how easy it can be to grow food locally. This is simultaneously a future where crop farmers have all the latest information in one easy-to-find place so that they can make informed decisions and can grow their crops more efficiently and sustainably. This app is designed to help people make the most of the agricultural potential of the land around them, no matter how small.
