App Description
Long before the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, Americans of various political, social and religious backgrounds called for the end of slavery within the United States. In the 19th-century, social reformers such as William Lloyd Garrison, former slaves such as Frederick Douglass and writers such as Harriet Beecher Stowe joined together in a renewed push for complete abolition. Abolitionism in the United States: Writings and Artifacts contains more than 50 books, pamphlets, essays, sermons, broadsides and handbills that illustrate their struggle. Pro-slavery voices and legislative documents are also included.
