App Description

If ever there were a ‘museum without walls’ it is Newcastle. The architectural critic Ian Nairn described the feeling of ‘coming back’ over the Tyne. A feeling which will be recognised by all those that know and love Newcastle. This App is for those still lucky enough not to have discovered Newcastle, a treat awaits you. Newcastle is one of the most fascinating cities in all of England.

Newcastle has many beautiful buildings, a selection of which are included in this App. Look up from ground level and you will see some of the many forgotten signs and faces. There are, to quote Ian Nairn, “views that stop you dead half way down a street or the flight of steps that sucks you in like a vortex”.

Newcastle’s Bridges, Stairs, Chares make it unique, the resurgent Quayside takes on a magical hue at dawn and dusk. Added to this there are six Grade 1 listed Churches, all in the City Centre, all of which can be viewed in the space of 90 minutes. Then there are the forgotten doorways on Collingwood Street and Moseley Street, largely ignored by cars and pedestrians alike. Newcastle has many monuments to Engineers, some old and still functioning, like the High Level and Swing Bridges, others more recent. A suggested ‘Engineers Walk’ is included.
