It's not known for sure where Shut the Box originated. Most theories point to a source in Northern France. It appears that it has been played in this region for at least two hundred years. At the start of the game all tiles are uncovered. Two dice are rolled and the corresponding tile or tiles are covered. The game ends if no tile could be covered on a throw of the dice. The final score is the sum of the numbers remaining uncovered at the end. The lowest score wins. Cover all tiles and you shut the box!

Shut the Box Thai style, always roll two dice, but only cover one tile matching one of the dice or their sum. For example, if the dice show a 2 and a 3 you may cover one of 2, 3 and 5.
