App Description

What history exists in your neighborhood?

With American Experience's Mapping History app, you can relive the history of the abolitionist movement by exploring places central to the nation's anti-slavery effort. Retrace the steps taken by 10,000 freed slaves as they celebrated in Charleston, SC shortly after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. In Nantucket, watch a film clip from "The Abolitionists" documentary detailing the moving story of Frederick Douglass' childhood spent in slavery. In Philadelphia, layer an image of Pennsylvania Hall engulfed in flames in 1838 over the structure that stands there today, and see for yourself how it has transformed over time.

→ Take curated walking tours in cities key to the American abolitionist movement.
→ Find the most significant locations, read about their roles in history, and compare archival images with how the sites look today.
→ Explore the map, pinned with hundreds of videos and archival images from museums, libraries, archives, PBS member stations and users from across North America.
→ Pinch to zoom in and out of the map, and read the history behind each site from Maine to Nebraska.
→ Watch more than 30 clips from the American Experience film "The Abolitionists."
→ Find the history of abolition in your state!

The app updates constantly as new pins are added by American Experience, our partners, and the public. You may submit your own content to the Abolitionist Map of America online at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/interactive-map/abolitionists-map/
