★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Oddly precise pack film camera emulation.
FotoRoid isn't like other vintage camera apps that try to broadly mimic a bunch of different retro cameras and photographic processes. Instead, FR aims to provide an accurate emulation of a highly specific photographic process: the peel-apart, medium format 4x5 instant pack film.
The process was so valuable to photographers, over the ensuing 50 years, camera backs that accepted pack film would be made for most medium format cameras (including high end camera models from Mayima & Hasselblad) so that photographers could shoot "instant proofs" for clients.
The specific physical process often resulted in "imperfect" images and these imperfections resulted in an aesthetic which had it's own artistic value.
FotoRoid 2HD and the free model (FotoRoid 200) aim to replicate the dysfunctional characteristics of pack film images: expired film, uneven distribution of dyes, light leakage, varying film types. These dysfunctional characteristics may be employed by artists in the recreation of the aesthetic. And to imbue the viewer of the image with a specific photographic era.
Compared to FotoRoid 200, the 2HD model full resolution image processing and utilizes high precision, floating point processing. Unlike many retro camera apps, FotoRoid uses the power of the GPU and does everything in real-time. There are no spinning wheels in this app, even for high resolution.
Works best with iPhone 4 / iPad 2 / iPod Touch (with 2 cameras) and later.
