The Warwick University Art Collection, which now numbers over 800 works, came into existence thanks to the vision of the University’s first architect Eugene Rosenberg. Rosenberg had a strong belief in the importance of public art and wished those who studied and worked here would have daily exposure to original works; moreover he persuaded Sir Alistair McAlpine, to donate paintings by some of the foremost artists of the day.
The collection has continued to be an integral part of the university’s development from its foundation in 1965 and includes contemporary prints, sculpture, photography and ceramics as well as paintings. Unlike a museum or gallery collection it is dispersed across the University campuses in over 40 buildings and it is not easy to get an idea of the whole.
This app offers an opportunity to view some of the significant developments in the visual arts during the last 50 years and allows the collection to be seen in its entirety.
